In their own words, what do Americans say about artificial intelligence?

I think if we can focus on a lot of the good it can do, like sorting data, accumulating data, etc, then it can be useful. If we advance it for nefarious reasons, or to be fully autonomous, then we may have issues.

While I do fear for the replacement and implications of further AI development, I understand that it's also too far gone at this point. It will continue to grow and be invested into, and I do find that there is a lost of usefulness in using it, so might as well. One can hope it'll be handled responsibly, but it is likely to be our next step of evolution that surpasses us eventually.

My main problem is with the fact that we live in a cutthroat society where everyone has to work for spoiled rich people their entire lives to be allowed to exist. Artificial Intelligence is already putting undue strain on the energy grid and we don't have the infrastructure to support it. As is always the way with human beings, we have seen that the priority is not to use it to improve humanity. It is stealing from the arts and not being focused on tasks that can help heal the sick, or give people quality of life yet. We haven't earned it yet.

A chatty type of AI bot for mental health, friendship, social skills, learning new personal traits and habits, organizing one's life, helping with work, are all great things that AI can help with and it can do SO much more. Once we started making real gains on AI, it's like we sailed past any discussions about purposes, accountability, intentions, risks... we just went full-steam ahead and our greed and egos took over. Now AI is everywhere. It's a tool of lazy thinkers, a tool of deception. It will be our downfall. It will replace people in workplaces in MANY industries... trades that used to be meaningful and creative (advertising, design, art, etc.) have now been made obselete and will be filled by the brainless, uninspired droning of machines and algorithms. I do think that the technology has a lot of potential to do good for humanity as a whole and that this discovery should be researched to better understand how it works as well as its strengths and weaknesses. However, I think that the vast majority of the companies that are currently developing AI at scale, and the companies who are rushing to implement it, are being unbelievably careless and irresponsible and so overall I cannot say I support the current developmental track that the technology is on nor the people behind it.

I am an artificial intelligence researcher and likely have a different definition of "artificial intelligence" than people who mainly know the term from current events. Artificial intelligence, in the sense of the study of agency and decision-making from a computational perspective, has unique things to contribute to cognitive science. However, recent successes in data-intensive systems contribute little to this project as the system's decision making criteria are not transparent to the creators, and I hope to see artificial intelligence progress in a direction that encourages more intimate engagement with and modeling of the underlying domain.
