I recently published an article about Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Specifically, I wanted to know:

  1. Does the typical American agree that AGI is possible to build?
  2. Does the typical American agree that AGI should be built?
  3. Does the typical American agree that an AGI should have the same rights as a human being?

Briefly, the answers were:

  1. Yes. Americans agree AGI is possible to build and increasingly so.
  2. Kinda. Fewer Americans agree that AGI should be built than agree it is possible to build. Agreement is neither (definitively) increasing nor decreasing.
  3. Not at all. In 2021, Americans disagreed that an AGI should have human rights. In 2023, they disagreed more strongly.

The full article is available open access: Attitudes Toward Artificial General Intelligence: Results from American Adults in 2021 and 2023

I will soon replicate this study. Stay tuned to this blog to find out how attitudes have changed in 2024!
